Mercury builds its FourStroke maintenance schedule around a straightforward rule: service at 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. In Lowcountry saltwater the calendar usually gets there before the hour meter does, which is why an annual service is the practical baseline even for owners who only run their boat a dozen times a season.

Flush after every single saltwater trip
If you take one thing from this article, take this one. Salt does not evaporate out of your cooling passages. It concentrates, crystallizes, and slowly restricts flow until the engine runs hot and something expensive lets go.
Use the flush port or muffs, run fresh water through for the time your manual specifies, and do it after every trip in salt or brackish water. Not most trips. Every trip. It takes about ten minutes and it is the difference between an engine that lasts two decades and one that does not.
While the water is running, rinse the cowling, the midsection and the transom bracket too.
The 100-hour or annual service
This is the core of Mercury’s FourStroke schedule:
- Engine oil and oil filter. Use the factory-specified marine oil. Marine four-strokes run under sustained high load in a way car engines never do, and automotive oil is not an acceptable substitute.
- Gear oil. Drain, inspect and refill. The inspection is the valuable part, covered below.
- Fuel filters. Including the water-separating filter, which on larger four-strokes lives in the bilge rather than on the engine.
Annual service adds:
- Water pump and impeller. Inspection, and in saltwater usually replacement.
- Spark plugs. Inspected and replaced as needed. Healthy plugs show light bronze coloring and sharp edges.
- Computer diagnostics and a compression check. The diagnostic scan pulls stored fault codes that never showed up as a warning light, which is often how a developing problem gets caught early.
Read your gear oil, do not just change it
Every gear oil change is a free look inside your lower unit. Three things to check as it drains:
- Milky or coffee-colored oil means water is getting past the seals. Fix it now. Water in a gearcase over a winter will corrode bearings and turn a seal job into a rebuild.
- Metal paste on the magnetic drain screw. A light gray film is normal wear. Visible flakes or chunks are not.
- Low volume coming out when you did not put low volume in. It went somewhere.
Anodes are consumable, and in saltwater they go fast
Sacrificial anodes exist to corrode so your gearcase and powerhead do not. Check them at every service. Replace them when they are about half gone rather than waiting until they disappear.
Never paint anodes, and never coat them with anything. A painted anode protects nothing. Boats kept in a slip year round go through anodes considerably faster than trailered boats, so check more often if yours lives in the water.
The 300-hour and 1,000-hour items
Beyond the annual cycle, Mercury specifies additional inspections and filter changes at 300 hours. Verado models have a pressurized fuel filter that requires dealer service at that interval. Belt service comes in around 1,000 hours.
Most recreational owners in our area will hit these on a calendar basis rather than an hours basis, but if you run a lot of hours, these matter. Check your manual for your specific model, since requirements vary across the range.
Fuel: the problem that gets blamed on the engine
A large share of the running problems we diagnose are fuel problems rather than engine problems.
- Buy fresh fuel and buy it from stations that turn over volume.
- Ethanol up to E10 is approved, but ethanol attracts water and degrades over time. Ethanol-free fuel is worth seeking out for a boat that sits between trips.
- Use fuel stabilizer any time the boat will sit more than a few weeks.
- Change the water-separating filter on schedule and keep a spare aboard.
- Do not store the tank near empty. A mostly full tank has less room for condensation.
Battery and electrical
Modern four-strokes are more electrically dependent than the engines they replaced. They need a healthy starting battery with clean, tight, corrosion-free connections. A weak battery can produce symptoms that look like engine faults, including odd gauge readings and hard starting. Check terminals at every service and keep them protected.
How you store it matters
Trim the engine down when storing so water drains out of the exhaust and cooling passages rather than sitting in them. Leaving an outboard tilted up traps water, and in a rare Lowcountry freeze that water can do real damage.

Most saltwater owners should plan on annual impeller replacement, and it is part of Mercury’s annual service. An impeller can look intact and still have lost enough flexibility to reduce flow, and impeller failure is one of the most common causes of overheating.
What happens if I skip a gear oil change?
Gear oil changes double as an inspection. Milky or discolored oil means water is getting past the seals, and metal on the magnetic drain screw means internal wear. Catching either early is a seal job. Ignoring it usually means a rebuilt or replaced gearcase.
Does ethanol fuel damage Mercury outboards?
